Shri B. N. Mahapatra, an officer of the Indian Railway Accounts Service has assumed office as the Financial Commissioner of Indian Railways at Railway Board, New Delhi. Prior to this, he was working as Additional Member/Finance of Railway Board at New Delhi.
Shri Mahapatra, a Post Graduate with Political Science from Delhi University, joined Indian Railways Accounts Service in 1980. Thereafter, he worked in various capacities in Khurda Road, Chakradharpur, Kharagpur, Bilaspur Railway Divisions and also in South Eastern Railway Headquarters at Garden Reach, Kolkata. He was posted as Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) in Tinsukia Railway Division of North East Frontier Railway.
Apart from this, he also worked as Executive Director (Establishment), Executive Director (Expenditure), and Advisor (Accounts) at Railway Board, New Delhi. He was additional General Manager of East Coast Railway from December 2015 to November 2016.
He has undergone training in Strategic Management in Rotman’s University, Toronto in Canada and also visited United States, United Kingdom, Spain, France, China, Austria and the Czech Republic on various assignments and was also the Head of a delegation to Japan in “Semi High Speed Services”.
Shri Mahapatra was born on 15th January, 1958 in Chhatrapur of Ganjam District.The Financial Commissioner of Railways plays a pivotal role in allocation of funds and for all expenses and revenues of the Railways. He is taking over as Head of Railway Accounts at a very crucial juncture when Railways is headed towards major structural and policy reforms.
