Indian Railways, in its way of journey towards the progress of the nation has created new milestones in infrastructure creation in 2016-17 financial year. Under the active guidance of Ministry of Railways headed by Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, Indian Railways has added various significant infrastructure creations pertaining to different aspects during the recently concluded financial year to meet the demands of Rail Traffic on its network.
Since the formation of network in the country, Indian Railways registered the highest ever expansion by adding 2855kms of new lines, Gauge Conversion and commissioning of doubling works in last financial year which have taken rapid strides to cross the new milestones which includes commissioning of 953kms of new Railway Lines. The North East Region of the country has been converted into broad gauge completely.
In terms of Electrification of the Indian Railways network, altogether 2013kms of Electrification has been completed as against target of 2000kms set for last fiscal which is the highest ever achieved by Indian Railways for any fiscal.
Aspects relating to Safety to rail & road users were also taken up in 2016-17 financial year. 1503 unmanned Level Crossings have been eliminated during the year which is the highest number for any year. 1306 Road over Bridges (ROBs) and Subways were completed by creating another record for any year. 484 Manned Level Crossings were also eliminated by means of construction of Road over Bridges and Subways. In terms of rehabilitating old Bridges to strengthen and enhance their life span and Safety, 750 such identified Bridges all over IR have been rehabilitated during the year.
To enhance the growth of freight traffic Indian Railways has commissioned 45 freight terminals in 2016-17 financial year as against the general average of 27 freight terminals getting commissioned per year. Due to the efforts and new policy making by Railway Board, this has been synergized to bear success and a new record number of freight terminals have been made operational.
Apart from this, Rolling Stock like manufacturing of locomotives and passenger coaches have also shown a significant jump. 4280 passenger coaches have been manufactured in 2016-17 as against 3978 in previous financial year. Similarly, 658 locomotives have been manufactured in last fiscal as against 621 locomotives in 2015-16 financial year.
To achieve the need and growth in freight and passenger transportation in the country, Infrastructure creation in Indian Railways was very much essential. Due to the liberalised and innovative policy of Railway Ministry and involvement of public-private partnership, these significant achievements have been created. This is the major reason of success of infrastructure works of Indian Railways this year.
